The Sheriff's Award

The Sheriffs’ Award is designed to recognise and honour a person, company or organisation that has shown courage and initiative in protecting People, Property or Liberty. The sponsors, the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals, with the endorsement of the Sheriffs of the City of London, will be presenting this annual award at the Company's Annual Dinner.
The Master of the company (Chairperson) together with a Liveryman selected each year by the Master and Court of Assistants (CEO) will be responsible equally to the Court for the effective management of the Sheriffs' Award scheme on behalf of the Company, ensuring at all times that it reflects a professional image toward and on behalf of The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals.
Each year the CEO will make the arrangements and publicise the launch of the Sheriffs’ Award at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey). Following the launch by the Aldermanic Sheriff on or around 1 May each year, nominations for the award are sought from members of the public, emergency services and armed services in connection with:
1. any act of bravery by an individual or group
2. a major contribution to the protection of people and their liberty
3. or an innovative project that protects people and/or property
Each nomination will be acknowledged by the CEO and the first selection meeting will be held annually around the second week in August; those attending will be: Master, Aldermanic Sheriff, IPM, Senior, Middle and Junior Wardens, Founder members Steve Neville and Peter French, and the Committee CEO.
Having selected a maximum of twelve nominations all nominees will be informed in writing by the CEO.
The final selection meeting will take place around the second week of September and those attending will be: Master, Aldermanic Sheriff, IPM, Senior, Middle and Junior Wardens, Founder members Steve Neville and Peter French, the Committee CEO, and representatives from the Metropolitan Police, City Police, British Transport Police, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.
Having selected a winner for the bravery award those short listed to the final selection will be considered worthy of a Commendation award and all nominees will be informed in writing by the CEO.
The winner and two guests will be invited to attend the Annual Dinner to receive the award which will consist of a cheque for £2,000, Trophy, framed certificate and have an entry made in a book of honour maintained by the Company and kept outside the Judges’ Dinning room at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) in London.
If thought suitable and at the discretion of the selection committee, a second award may be made in connection with a Community project, the winner will be invited with two guests to attend Common Hall to receive the award which will consist of a framed certificate.
Those considered to be worthy of commendations will be invited with two guests to attend Common Hall to receive a framed certificate. If they are not able to attend a joint decision by the Chairman and CEO will be made to send an unframed certificate with a suitable letter from the Chairman to the recipient by post.
If required reasonable travel and accommodation expense will be paid.
Following Common Hall the CEO will review the process of the year’s activities and submit a report to the Chairman who will call a review meeting of the Awards Committee to discuss and resolve any issues raised.

How to fill out the nomination form
- Insert the name of the person, group or company you wish to nominate
- Insert their address and telephone numbers
- Insert an email address
- Do the same with your details
- Then write outlining the event or reason for the nomination
Please include date, location of the incident and all people involved explaining their roles and outcome as follows: result of Court appearance, injury/recovery, if a scheme how affective has it been, will it be reviewed and if so how often and to what end. Attach any supporting paperwork, photographs, CCTV footage etc.
Each nomination will be acknowledged
The final cut-off date for Nominations for each year's award will be Midnight on the 1st of August.
The nominators will be informed in writing following the first sift of nominations in August with both the nominator and nominees being informed in writing following the final selection in September.
Eligibility
Members of the Public, Police Service, Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade, Armed Services and the Security Services
Nominations will be judged on the following:
- Act of Bravery / Life Saving
- overall Impact on the Community
- preventative benefit to the Community
- contribution to the Community Partnership Approach
- innovative activity preventative / safety impact crime reduction
- victim support activity
- and completion of the nomination form.
